Food As Art Research
Research the topic of food as art. You may do one of two things to complete this assignment. You may write an academic style analysis or you may create a video.
Option 1 – Academic Essay
Find on thought provoking and reputable article, online or hardcopy, that discusses the issues raised by the readings. Write a blog post minimum of 750 words. Include the following:
- Cite your sources in a bibliographic format. Use the APA Editorial Style (go to a library for more info on APA). For example:
Bothum, P. (2002, July). No Yolk, Deviled Eggs Are an Artform York Daily Record [On-Line Newspaper]. Retrieved April 12, 2002 from http://ydr.com/food/5food1020710.shtml
- Briefly, in one paragraph, summarize the article or website.
- Using at least two more paragraphs, analyze the issues raised by your souces in comparison to the issues raised in the readings and other course materials. Include quotes from the readings to support your conclusions. I am looking for a comparison and contrast of your source with the course materials.
- Post this to your blog.
- If you have any questions about how to complete this assignment, email me ASAP. I will accept no late assignments.
Option 2 – Multimedia Essay
This assignment is more free form and is up to you to decide how to create it. This should be an original creation though it can be mashed up of audio, video, text, and images from other sources. No PowerPoints. You may use Prezi. Make sure to include bibliographic information about the sources. Once you create the video upload it to Youtube (or other hosting source) and embed the video in a post on your blog. Limit the length of audio or video presentations to no more than 3-5 minutes. Here are three ideas.
- Do research like in option one. Instead of writing an analysis and posting the writing on your blog, record yourself reading the analysis. Then illustrate the audio with images from the web or scanned from books.
- Record yourself as you are creating and/or enjoying a meal, ala Food Network. As you are cooking/eating explain why food is or is not art. Use examples from the course readings or other sources to support your conclusions.
- Interview others as they are creating and/or enjoying a meal. Ask them questions about why they believe food is or is not art. Use quotes from the course readings or other sources to frame your questions to the interviewees.
- I am totally open to other ideas. The point here is to be creative while exploring the topic.
You will be graded on the following criteria.
- Appropriately addresses topic area of Is Food Art?
- References alternative sources, such as course readings.
- Demonstrates creativity, experimentation and/or risk-taking
